The renaissance of the Lynde and Harry Bradley Technology and Trade School has re-designed the educational experience. Integrating 21st century equipment with the innovative curriculum, students are bring trained for the manufacturing and technical jobs of tomorrow, connecting directly with local employers and building a bridge to future success. The school prepares students to pursue technical careers through one of four delivery systems: direct employment, adult apprenticeships, or additional two and four-year degrees.

The school was founded in 1906 as Boys' Technical High School (1906-1972) and evolved into Milwaukee Technical School (1973-2001). In 1998, under the auspices of the Greater Milwaukee Committee, and with a $20 million gift from Jane Bradley Pettit, a coalition of business, educators and civic leaders established Bradley Technology and Trade School. The new facility features leading-edge technology and courses presented in an integrated, project-based format.

The school guides students through a transition from fact-based content-oriented format to standards-driven project-based activities. Program content is based on core academic, employability and technology standards. Students in grade 9 explore technical processes; grade 10 explores technical systems. Students in grades 11 and 12 study technology through an academy structure. They commit to a major in Communications, Construction or Manufacturing. General studies required for typical high school degrees are a part of the curriculum at all grade levels.

Bradley Tech once had a graduation rate of 55% and placed only six students in MATC.  In 2007, the graduation rate rose to 85% with placement into MATC increasing more than tenfold. And last year’s, the rate increased to 89%; yet this reflects only part of the continuous improvement at Bradley Tech. The school continues with Project Lead the Way, a program that promotes more students pursuing engineering degrees. Tracking studies of former students two months past graduation found that over 90% of Bradley Tech graduates have a job in their field, an apprenticeship or are enrolled in a 2-4 year college; this is up from 80% the year prior. The school consistently ranks within the top four Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) High Schools in grade point average, attendance and graduation rates.

GMC members formed a coalition of industry partners to provide financial support, curriculum advice and internships. In addition, GMC took a leadership role in site negotiation, overview of design and creation of Board of Commissioners.

The Greater Milwaukee Committee continues its involvement in this institution because of its ability to impact the future of the Milwaukee region, both as a successful example of community involvement in a public high school and the improved education of 1,500 students each year.
