Do we have the regional coordination needed to build the transportation system Milwaukee requires?

There are many variables to Milwaukee’s success, including attracting talent, developing housing, and strengthening its economy. A major factor to this is transportation, and how it must be viewed as a regional system, rather than a collection of individual projects. Do we have the regional coordination needed to build the transportation system Milwaukee requires?

The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC) is developing VISION 2060, its next long-range land-use and transportation plan for the seven-county region. At the same time, Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is undertaking MCTS Forward, a process that will help shape the future of transit in Milwaukee County through 2027. With several significant transportation planning efforts underway, the GMC will bring together regional leaders to examine how these efforts connect and whether they are preparing Milwaukee for the future we want to build.

The conversation will provide a clear picture of how transportation decisions are made across the region and explore how responsibilities are divided among municipalities, Milwaukee County, the state, transit agencies, and regional planning organizations, and where those divisions can create barriers to progress.

GMC members will discuss what Milwaukee’s transportation system should look like to support a successful region, expand housing, attract talent, and strengthen its economy. We will consider which investments and connections will have the greatest impact and where gaps may exist between the plans already underway and the regional outcomes we want to achieve.

The goal is to move from a collection of transportation projects and individual jurisdictions toward a more connected regional vision that supports the Milwaukee we want to become.
