Letter from Cristy

Dear members of the Greater Milwaukee Committee,

Hello, all!

Following eight months as interim president, I’m honored to officially continue in the role as president and CEO of the GMC, and I’m excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.

This is an exciting moment for our organization as we explore how the GMC can build on its legacy to drive even greater impact across Greater Milwaukee. The ideas emerging from our strategy refresh work reinforce the unique role our members play in bringing people together around challenges and opportunities that no one organization can solve alone.

We look forward to continuing those conversations through upcoming events, member engagement and updates from across the GMC network.

Thank you for your continued leadership and commitment to Greater Milwaukee.

With gratitude,

Cristy Garcia-Thomas, Interim President

Strategic Update

Think Bigger. Act Faster. Deliver Results.

For over 75 years, the GMC has brought leaders together to tackle challenges no one organization can solve alone. As we look toward our next chapter, we are building on the strong strategic foundation created by the GMC and its members several years ago, using what we have learned and accomplished together to sharpen our focus for the future. This strategic refresh is about aligning around a new North Star and ensuring the GMC is positioned to create meaningful, measurable impact across Greater Milwaukee.

As part of this work, we recently completed four strategic sprints focused on Education, Talent, Infrastructure, and Neighborhood Development and Public Safety, led by our volunteer executives-on-loan, GMC member Mara Lord of MCW and Brian Thompson, formerly of UWM. Their research and synthesis of conversations are helping us identify common themes, opportunities, and potential next steps. This will also help us bring a longer-term, strategic perspective to complement shorter-term initiatives that are already underway. We also engaged Mayor Cavalier Johnson during this process and are encouraged by his alignment with the direction emerging from the work and his interest in a collaborative partnership.

At the heart of the discussions with our members is a simple ambition: Think Bigger. Act Faster. Deliver Results. We want to help create a region where more people want to live, work, raise a family, build a career, start a business, and invest for the long term. That means making progress across strong schools, safe communities, vibrant neighborhoods, economic opportunity, infrastructure, and quality of life.

The GMC’s role is not to duplicate existing efforts or dictate solutions. It is to bring together the right leaders, resources, expertise, and accountability needed to accelerate progress. Our next chapter must be about moving from convening to action and from activity to measurable impact. We should increasingly be able to answer one simple question: What changed because the GMC was involved?

The GMC has an extraordinary foundation with a remarkable history, an exceptional network of leaders, and decades of credibility – but our history cannot be our strategy. We have the opportunity to build a GMC that is more engaged, relevant, consequential, and the organization that leaders turn to when a challenge is too important, complex or interconnected for any one organization to solve.

Our members are our greatest asset, and your continued engagement demonstrates the power of building relationships and trust. Relationships create trust. Trust creates alignment. Alignment creates action. We are not simply talking about the future of Greater Milwaukee but helping create it.

Meet the Press: An Evening with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

September 17
4:30-6:00pm
330 E Kilbourn

If you missed this event last year, be sure to join us on September 17 for a happy hour and news room tour with the Journal Sentinel!

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel invites Greater Milwaukee Committee members to an exclusive open house and tour of the downtown newsroom on September 17 to explore our modern space and mingle with our journalists.

Attendees will get a behind-the-scenes look at our fifth-floor office at 330 E. Kilbourn, where staff moved in 2020 after the sale of the former Journal Sentinel building at 333. W. State St.

Come chat with reporters, editors and producers and learn more about our new community-funded reporting initiatives. GMC Member and Journal Sentinel Executive Editor Greg Borowski will host a series of quick, casual stand-up talks. You’ll also meet some of our new grant-funded journalists who are helping us expand our local coverage – they welcome your ideas! Enjoy light refreshments as you connect with fellow GMC members and mingle with reporters from the state’s largest news organization.

Journal Sentinel staff and/or building security will be stationed in the building lobby for the duration of this event to greet attendees and escort them up the secured elevators and into the 5th floor newsroom.

Hosted by GMC member Greg Borowski.

September 14 Membership Meeting: Milwaukee’s Destination Master Plan

September 14
12:00-1:30pm
Fiserv Forum

Visit Milwaukee is beginning work on Milwaukee’s first Destination Master Plan, and GMC members will have an early opportunity to help shape it. This interactive session will explore the projects, investments and big ideas that could strengthen Milwaukee’s visitor economy while making our community an even better place to live, work, play and stay.

After a brief look at what destination master planning has unlocked in other cities, local leaders will share what they believe could move Milwaukee forward. Then, GMC members will roll up their sleeves for a table discussion about the opportunities Milwaukee should pursue. Ideas gathered during the session will help inform the planning process and will be shared with the consultant leading the work.

Register today for this exciting meeting to kick off our fall schedule!
