Letters from the President

June 30, 2018

With the growth of our region comes significant opportunity. This opportunity can be seen and celebrated in the business community, from a public perspective, and on a national level. At the June 11 monthly membership meeting, we heard from representatives in each of these areas, specifically as it relates to air travel and the impact it has on our economy. We were joined by new GMC member Alan Yeung, Director of U.S. Strategi...

On February 21, 2018, we lost a dedicated and thoughtful member of our community, Francis R. Croak. Fran is greatly missed as a member of the GMC, and a long term supporter of Bradley Tech. His passion for education within our community will live on through a perpetual scholarship fund for Bradley Tech students, established by the Bradley Tech Foundation, administered by the Greater Milwaukee Committee.

The goal of the scholars...

How many times have we heard about a place being unsafe or abandoned and wished that we could change it? It may be a place we remember from times when it was full of people, fun and vibrant. Today, people and neighborhoods are taking back those places to create spaces where people gather, children play, and artists create. Sometimes it is a vacant lot full of litter and broken glass that is transformed to a neighborhood pocket...

There are many incredible things happening in our city, yet the renaissance happening in our Downtown has not been felt by many in our city, including many of the adjacent neighborhoods. MKE United, a cross-sectoral effort to create a 10-year strategic action agenda for a shared and inclusive vision for our Downtown and adjacent neighborhoods, is working to ensure this prosperity spreads across all neighborhoods, both adjacent...

We had an exciting membership meeting in January, with Mayor Barrett and Reggie Moore highlighting Milwaukee’s plan for reducing and preventing violence within our communities through the Blueprint for Peace.  They walked through the  six goals and key strategies. I had the honor of serving on the Steering Committee for the Blueprint for Peace along with other GMC members, businesses, non-profits, and foundations. Now more tha...

There is still much work that needs to be done.

Technology has become a foundational element of our society. The way we communicate, do business, travel and manufacture our products is reliant on technology. As a growing region that is now attracting international companies like Haribo, Foxconn and potentially, Amazon, our ability to match the demands of a technology centered economy is more imperative than ever.

Milwaukee is home to some of the world's largest innovative an...

At our most recent membership meeting, Jonas Prising and the panel (list panel members) clearly defined the importance and role of corporate culture. Locally and internationally, Manpower’s  purpose is defined as “meaningful and sustainable employment has the power to change the world.”

Corporate culture is defined as the set of attitudes, values, goals, and practices that that characterize an institution or organization. It is...

"Human potential is a catalyst for business and economic success. For young people to be part of that success, we must help them tap into opportunities. It is vital they can access options to reskill, to adapt to new technology, to relocate to take on jobs in other regions and countries, and to learn on-the-job, online and in the classroom. If business, government and citizens want to ensure sustainable growth, they must partn...

When the MMAC and the GMC, seven counties and the city of Milwaukee came together as a region 12 years ago to market our assets and build our capacity, the result was M7. We had great expectations of economic growth, but never could have predicted that M7, MMAC and WEDC would land the biggest economic development opportunity in US history. This project will dramatically change the economic future here for generations to come....
